of the European Research Council

Professor Tomasz Dietl of the Institute of Physics is a new member of the Steering Committee of the European Research Council (ERC). He was appointed by the European Commission on 31 January 2012. The Steering Committee supervises the activities of executive bodies of the ERC, including the plans of work, budget and annual reports. The Committee consists of five members, appointed for a two-year, renewable term, two of the ERC Scientific Council, including professor Dietl, and three senior officials of the Commission.

ERC was founded five years ago under the 7th Framework Program as the first pan-European organization to stimulate, support and provide funding for research. ERC distributes, in the form of research grants, 15% of the total budget (7.5 billion Euros) of the 7th Framework Program. Up to date ERC received more than 26 000 applications for funding research projects, from which it financed more than 2250.
