SCOPE
The aim of the workshop is to bring together users of short wavelength sources and scientists involved in the investigations of low-dimensional structures (such as surfaces, interfaces, clusters, quantum wells, wires, dots, nanostructures) in order to plan future experiments at novel X-VUV sources – Free Electron Lasers (FEL). The workshop will consist of invited talks and discussions in working groups

The workshop has been motivated by the great success of the TESLA Test Facility Free Electron Laser (TTF FEL) project, at Deutsches Elektronen Synchrotron DESY in Hamburg. The TTF FEL has recently achieved design parameters working at extreme hard ultraviolet radiation. The laser beam has an unique combination of properties which have never existed so far: short wavelength 80-120 nm, very high power ~ 1GW (~10^13 photons/pulse), ultra-short light pulses ~ 50 fs). In about two years, the existing test facility will be upgraded to a 300 meter long free electron laser with wavelengths shorter than six nanometers. The ultimate goal of the TESLA FEL project is to reach hard X-ray regime. There are other X-VUV and X-ray FEL projects being developed in Germany, Italy, USA, Japan or France. These unprecedented light sources would provide research opportunities not existent until now.


PROGRAM

The program will include:
  • properties of FEL X and VUV sources
  • first experiments at TTF FEL at DESY
  • planned experiments at FEL sources
  • experience with application of synchrotron radiation to study low-dimensional structures (LDS)
  • current topics and issues in characterization and investigations of LDS
